For those who haven’t dived into the church fathers (understandably so, since at about forty volumes images of being crushed to death by a fallen bookcase or turned all ragged, bearded hermit come to mind) the easy answer has always been to read excerpts, the compilation of which is an aged (Thomas Aquinas’ Catenae Aurea) and honored pursuit.
Currently Christian Book dot com is running a Bargain price sale on one such anthology with good pedigree. Inheriting Wisdom is about three hundred pages of early Christian excerpts on a wide range of topics from everyday life to theology, compiled by Everett Ferguson, senior scholar of early Christianity and compiler of at least two previous collections of this sort. The price price is a mere 5.99 US, making a perfect excuse to sample early christian writings if you never have, or an inexpensive useful gift. I may buy two or three copies myself, just for gimmes.
