Christmas Music- The Goulablogger Selection

For those who need hints on what to listen to or for those who want to know I am nearby during the Holy Days, here is my standard selection of Christmas music, courtesy of the Amazon mp3 store:

John Rutter:

1. Candlelight

2. Carols from Clare

3. Christmas Night

4. Christmas Star

5. The Holly and the Ivy

6. The John Rutter Christmas Album

Early and Victorian Christmas Music:

7. A Medieval Christmas Feast

8. The Carol Album

9.  Christus Natus Est

Anonymous 4

10. Christmas From Medieval Hungary

11. On Yoolis Night

The Christmas Revels

12. Christmas Revels

13. Victorian Christmas Revels

Of course, if these don’t float your boat, Amazon MP3 has an entire Holiday MP3 Store for you to choose from. Personally I would stick to the Classical and Traditional selections. The prices are good, and the ability to listen to clips and read reviews before you buy is even better!

Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!

  1. So this is a music you were talking about… I’ve never been one for Christmas music but Babyface put out a Christmas album a number of years ago that I remember was quite good.

  2. Nick,

Actually I could add some more screaming movie trailer music, and some Celtic fiddle, but I’m trying to spread it out.

My big thing as far as Christmas music is to listen to mostly sacred songs. After over twenty years in retail, I am sick to death of the whole secular Christmas thing. I mean, the reason for the season is right in the NAME.

Admittedly the medieval stuff has more Marian references than my Protestant self would like, but that’s part of Christian tradition and ignoring it won’t make it go away. And Christmas music is some of the most beautiful stuff the church has.

And almost anything beats the eighth millionth repeat of the Chipmunks Christmas song.

  3. WOW! SO GLAD TO FIND SOMEONE WHO ENJOYS CLASSICAL MUSIC! i AM A ORATORIO SOLOIST & HAVE SUNG RUTTER. I LOVE HIS MUSIC, ESPECIALLT ARRANGEMENT OF CHRISTMAS CAROLS. i HAVEN’T ORDERED NEW CHRISTMAS MUSIC LATELY. I JUST WENT ON AMAZON & SANK THE SHIP! I WAS LOOKING FOR GERALD FINZI CHRISTMAS MUSIC. NOT SURE OF TITLE. HAVE TO CHECK. I HAVE IT ON CASSETTE TAPE. WORN OUT! alicehahn

  4. Alice,

    Thanks for the comment.

I opted for Rutter because he tends to do sacred music, and I am heartily sick of secular Christmas music. Imagine my surprise to learn Rutter isn’t a particularly religious person, he just likes sacred poetry.

The rest of the year I’m usually listening to solo, chamber, and concerto works with the string family. Lots of Bach, Paganini, C.F. Abel, Bottesini, Campagnoli, David, lots of “schools”. And loud trailer music.:-)

  5. I ACTUALLY ORDERED EARLY ENGLISH MUSIC, ALOT OF CATHEDRAL CHOIRS. i’M WITH YOU ON THE SECULAR CHRISTMAS MUSIC. PAGANINI- VIOLIN CONCERTO ? NOT SURE OF KEY- LOVE IT! iT’S HAUNTING. DID YOU SEE THE RED VIOLIN WITH SAMUEL JACKSON? STORY ABOUT THE STRATAVARIUS ?SP.
PASSED DOWN THRU YEARS. MERRY CHRISTMAS!
